PERAK’s public hearing on the revival of the Yau Tet Shin Bazaar saw an agreement on two matters – that the bazaar be restored as Ipoh’s icon and that it maintains its unique octagonal shape.
Most of the 300 people who turned up for the hearing at a hotel on Wednesday night were supportive of the bazaar’s revival and wanted it to be turned into a place of significance for locals and tourists.
Perak Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry deputy president Liew Sew Yee said: “There are at least a dozen Chinese clan associations in the surrounding streets. A street can be renamed Chinese Culture Street.
“We can also have a Malay Culture Street and an Indian Culture Street with the entire area be gazetted as a tourism district.”
He said the bazaar should have vendors selling traditional local goodies besides housing a mu-seum and an exhibition hall displaying local products.
Other individuals, including architects and non-governmental organisation representatives, shared Liew’s ideas.
Some wanted the bazaar to be a multi-storey building complete with a performing arts centre, a convention hall, an aquarium, a cooking school for tourists to learn local dishes and even a giant green- house filled with local blooms.
Perak Education, Housing, Local Government and Public Transport Committee chairman Nga Kor Ming, who chaired the hearing, said the steering committee for the bazaar’s revival would consider all suggestions presented.
“We will meet by Jan 23 to discuss the matter and we will come up with a decision as soon as possible,” he said.
He said the state may hold a contest for local and foreign architects to come up with a winning design for the bazaar.
“We can then choose the best 10 designs and put them up for public voting,” he said.
Those keen to submit proposals can do so by Jan 20 and address them to Suhaimi Abdul Manaf (Jabatan Penilaian), 4th Floor, Ipoh City Council, Greentown or email to [email protected]
