Poor brothers get new home
FOUR months ago, mentally disabled brothers, Foong Ah See and Ah Man, shared a tiny cot in a rundown shack they called home.
Today, thanks to public donations, the el-derly duo not only have mattresses to lie on but also their own rooms, a proper toilet, a kitchen and a roof that does not leak when it rains.
After receiving the house keys from state Education, Local Government, Housing and Public Transport Committee chairman Nga Kor Ming on Tuesday, an ecstatic Ah See, 72, proudly explored the single-storey house in Bercham.
Giving the thumbs-up sign, he muttered that the house was very nice.
Later, a gleeful Ah See made sure he switched off the fan and locked every door in the house before stepping out.
Nga said: “It is a very happy moment for the brothers. They had been living in a very sad condition for over 20 years. Now, they have a proper roof over their heads.”
The house was built with public funds in response to press reports which highlighted the brothers’ plight last September.
The siblings had been staying in a zinc shack for some 50 years. About 20 years ago, heavy storms further damaged their already dilapidated home. However, the brothers had no choice but to continue living there.
Ah See earns a living by selling joss sticks while his 63-year-old brother, who is jobless, constantly wanders around by himself and often goes missing.
Bercham assemblyman Sum Cheok Leng, who kick-started the fundraising effort, said RM28,000 was collected.
“We spent about RM22,000 to rebuild the home. The remaining money will go into the DAP’s medical fund to help other needy people,” he said.
