Kulasegaran not reappointed as Ipoh City councillor
IPOH: Ipoh Barat MP M. Kulasegaran has been dropped as Ipoh City councillor.
State Education, Local Government, Housing and Public Transport Committee chairman Nga Kor Ming, who announced the list of councillors yesterday, played down the issue, saying that the DAP vice-chairman had declined to be reappointed to the position.
Kulasegaran’s political secretary P. Sugu- maran would take over the council seat, added Nga.
Kulasegaran, when contacted, declined to comment.
During the press conference, Nga said there would be 40 new faces in the 15 local councils in the state this year.
“Their terms end on Dec 31,” he said, adding they would be sworn in after Chinese New Year.
Of the 40, one each from the district councils of Perak Tengah and Gerik were dropped as they were under police investigation.
Nga added that the total number of councillors was four more than the 338 last year.
“Some councils need more councillors to beef up services,” he added.
He noted that the new list of names had been vetted by police.
To a question, Nga said councillors were dropped after being evaluated by their council chiefs and political parties.
On the revival of the Yau Tet Shin Bazaar, Nga said there would be a competition in June to choose the best design for the bazaar.
“The bazaar’s octagon shape must be retained for nostalgia,” he added, noting that the state hoped construction of the bazaar could be completed in 24 months after the design competition.
