BERUAS: The Solid Waste and Public Cleansing Management Act will be enforced by the end of the year whether state governments choose to accept it or not, said Housing and Local Government Minister Datuk Seri Ong Ka Chuan.
The Act had been passed in Parliament and “whether or not you want to accept it (the Act), it’s the law,” he said on Friday after the swearing-in ceremony of the Beruas MCA, Youth and Wanita committee members at Changkat Kruing, about 80km from Ipoh.
Ong said this in reply to Perak executive councillor Nga Kor Ming who objected to the Act as it seemed “lopsided and unfair to the people”.
Nga had pointed out that the Act gave three concessionaires the contract to provide services currently undertaken by local councils, which would inevitably drive the assessment rates up.
Ong replied that the Federal Government would only take from the people’s assessments the same portion of money previously allocated by the councils for rubbish, grass cutting and drain cleaning.
“None of this involve charging the public extra,” he reiterated, adding that the Government was still in the process of taking over the services from the local councils.
He said the jurisdiction of the Solid Waste Management Board, set up under the Act, only involved discussing with the local authorities about the takeover of cleaning duties.
